UTI Treatment by Telehealth in Florida
A simple bladder infection in an otherwise healthy adult is one of the clearest uses of telehealth, because the diagnosis rests on a recognizable pattern of symptoms and treatment is a short course of antibiotics. Anything suggesting a kidney infection, or a UTI in pregnancy, needs in-person care instead.
What a straightforward bladder infection looks like
Burning with urination, needing to go urgently and frequently, passing only small amounts, lower abdominal pressure, and sometimes cloudy or strong-smelling urine. No fever, no back pain, no vomiting.
In a healthy non-pregnant adult with that combination and no complicating history, treatment can reasonably be started based on symptoms.
When it is not straightforward
These situations need in-person evaluation, and a video visit that identifies them is doing its job by sending you to the right place quickly.
- Fever, chills, flank or back pain, nausea or vomiting, which suggest the infection has reached a kidney
- Pregnancy, where a UTI carries added risk and is managed differently
- UTIs in men, which are treated as complicated and need further evaluation
- Blood in the urine, which needs follow-up even after the infection clears
- Several infections in a year, which warrants looking for an underlying cause
- A catheter, kidney stones, diabetes that is poorly controlled, or a weakened immune system
Testing and treatment
A urine culture is often worth obtaining, particularly for repeat infections or when symptoms do not resolve, because it identifies the organism and which antibiotics will work. It can be ordered to a lab near you.
When an antibiotic is appropriate, it is sent to your pharmacy, usually as a short course. Symptoms typically improve within a day or two. Symptoms that do not improve in about 48 hours, or that worsen at any point, need to be reported rather than waited out.
Recurrent infections
Three or more in a year, or two in six months, is a pattern worth investigating rather than treating episode by episode. Depending on the picture, that may mean cultures, a look at contributing factors, preventive strategies, or a urology referral.
Signs the infection has reached the kidneys
Fever, shaking chills, pain in your side or back, or nausea and vomiting with urinary symptoms need same-day in-person evaluation. Kidney infections can become serious quickly and are not treated over video.
